Our Team

Mal Dobson & Associates has a dedicated team of five financial planners, who work together to ensure clients are afforded the best expertise. Our planners are supported by administration staff with many years’ experience in the banking and financial services profession.

Steve Dobson

Director & Financial Planner

Steve is an Authorised Representative of Consultum Financial Advisers Pty Ltd, commencing with the practice in 1999. Steve holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Bachelor of Business (Financial Planning), Advanced Diploma of Public Safety (Police Investigation) and an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning).

Concurrent to the early development of Steve’s career as a financial planner, he was a Police Officer in uniform and detective positions with WA Police Force. This public sector background benefits our government employee clients, with understanding of government superannuation schemes, such as GESB. Steve was awarded the 2022 Consultum Financial Adviser Proprietor of the Year and was a national finalist in the 2016 Association of Financial Advisers Excellence in Education Award.

Steve is an experienced non-executive Director, currently serving on the board of organisations including the Tax Practitioners Board, Chair of Greyhounds WA and Willetton District Cricket Club. He previously held Board Membership with the Small Business Development Corporation of WA for ten years and the Gaming and Wagering Commission of WA. Steve is a volunteer football coach and life member of Bullcreek Leeming Junior Football Club, life member of WA Police Football Club, Life Member of Jandakot Volunteer Bushfire Brigade, and a Justice of the Peace.

Professional memberships include Fellow Chartered Financial Practitioner (FChFP) and AFP Member of the Financial Advice Association Australia, Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and Specialist Adviser of the SMSF Association.

Alex Cheng

Alex is an Authorised Representative of Consultum Financial Advisers Pty Ltd and has been employed as a Financial Planner with Mal Dobson & Associates since 2006. Alex previously worked for the ANZ Bank, SIRCA and the University of Sydney.

He has completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning) and a Certificate IV in Financial Services (Finance Broking). Alex is a CFP® member of Financial Advice Association Australia.

Matt Dobson

Matt is an Authorised Representative of Consultum Financial Advisers Pty Ltd, commencing with Mal Dobson & Associates in late 2005. Matt has a combined role where he also provides paraplanning support to our financial planners. Matt has completed a Certificate IV in Financial Services (Finance Broking) and an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning. Matt is an AFP member of the Financial Advice Association Australia .

Damien Scott

Damien is an Authorised Representative of Consultum Financial Advisers Pty Ltd, commencing with Mal Dobson & Associates in 2012. Damien also offers support to our financial planners. He has over six year’s retail management experience in the agriculture supply industry. Damien has completed an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning, and is a Fellow Chartered Financial Practitioner (FChFP) member of the Financial Advice Association Australia.

Rex Rozario

Financial Planner

Rex is an Authorised Representative of Consultum Financial Advisers Pty Ltd and joined the team at Mal Dobson & Associates in 2022. He has over 16 years’ experience in the financial services industry. Rex previously worked as a senior financial planner at MLC Advice where he gained over 7 years’ experience under both the NAB and Insignia Financial ownership. Prior to this Rex worked at GESB in several positions including in the former financial advice division (GESB Financial Advice) and technical team.

He has completed a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Finance, an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning) and a Certificate IV in Financial Services (Finance Broking). Rex is a member of the Financial Advice Association Australia.

Mal Dobson

Founder & Financial Controller

Mal ceased his role as a Financial Planner in December 2021 remaining with the business as the Financial Controller. Mal commenced working in the Financial Services industry in 1967 with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. He has completed an Advanced Diploma of Financial Planning. In 2010 Mal was recognised for his dedication to enriching the financial planning industry by being awarded Fellow membership of the Financial Planning Association. A Fellow of the FPA is an outstanding practitioner who has made a selfless contribution to the profession and provides exemplary leadership to their peers.

For over thirty years, Mal was actively involved in Australian Rules Football, earning life membership of the East Fremantle Football Club. Mal is a life member of the Jandakot Volunteer Bushfire Brigade and was a volunteer Committee Member for over 10 years with the Department of Parks & Wildlife Jandakot Regional Park Committee.
